Here, the owners of a tree-covered block in the Southwest Dandenong Ranges wanted a home that would cater for their family of Mum, Dad and two teenage boys.

The 4091m² site is oriented towards 270° views and besides the existing 1970s brick home, there was a garden, pool and tennis court. The family had lived there for years and loved the tranquillity. They asked Graeme Alexander Homes to design and build a home that would do the site justice, and retain the outdoor amenities.

"As the property sloped away from the street, we decided to level the front yard and conceal the bulk of the building underground," says Graeme Alexander. "A soft roof line further integrates the design. The dug-in level of the home contains the garage, rumpus, three bedrooms, a bathroom, study and laundry. These spaces open out to a sunken courtyard on one side of the house and the pool on the other.

"This design anchors the home, and means the upper levels have a single-storey appearance. Upstairs there's a walk-up entry, office, patio and kitchen with scullery. Living spaces are generous and open to the sprawling deck."
