Learning Curve
Traditional Maori patterns reflected in paving
The outdoor environment at Te Whanau o Tupuranga has been designed to support culturally responsive learning. Maori tukutuku patterns are incorporated into paved areas throughout the school, and many walkways are designed to reflect traditional Polynesian navigation paths.
Clay pavers for these areas were supplied by Auckland-based Monier Bricks & Roofing. The company supplied Monier Classic Cream and Classic Brown pavers, which were imported from the Monier factory in Australia. Marketing manager Louise Farac says the company took particular care to ensure colour consistency between the batches.
"Monier clay pavers also met the design brief for this project for a number of other reasons, including sustainability," she says. "The pavers are made from a natural material and are strong and long lasting, which means maintenance is simple. In addition, they won't fade, but will retain their natural earth colours and still look just as good in 50 years' time."
Monier clay pavers are available in a variety of colours, sizes and thicknesses, including 40mm, 50mm and 65mm. There are pavers specifically suited to high pedestrian and vehicular traffic areas, pool surrounds, outdoor entertainment areas and garden paths. The range includes the classic 230mm x 115mm bullnose and coper styles for edging.
