Kitchen features Marc Newson ovens from Smeg
It's not always easy to work out the best appliance selection for a new kitchen, but the owners of this new house had a head start. A friend had already installed the latest Smeg appliance technology in his own kitchen, and they were smitten with his Marc Newson oven.
Terry and Natasha Klink say they had originally planned for an extra-large freestanding range, but decided to go for two of the new Smeg 60cm Marc Newson ovens, in black. Not only was the size a better fit for the kitchen, but the aesthetics were also appealing, says Natasha Klink.
"I do a lot of cooking and must admit my choice was initially made because of the aesthetics. I love the styling and the black is a perfect match for the black backpainted glass splashback and the black-stained American oak cabinetry on the island. But the functionality has proved to be unbeatable this is the best oven I have had, and the pyrolytic cleaning is especially appreciated."
As the name suggests, the ovens were designed by the internationally renowned Australian-born designer Marc Newson. His collection, which comes in a choice of five colours and stainless steel, reinforces Smeg's belief that objects in daily use should be just as much about style and aesthetics as they are about technology and functionality.
This sensitivity has already inspired Smeg's collaboration with several leading architects and designers, including Renzo Piano. It has also led to the Marc Newson range winning the prestigious Good Design award.
In this kitchen, the Marc Newson ovens are teamed with a Smeg PX140 Linea gas hob. This 100cm semi-flush gas cooktop is distinguished by its burners, which are positioned in a line, rather than a square.
"Again, I particularly love the look of the cooktop, and it has the functionality to match," says Natasha Klink.
Special features of the cooktop include designer trivets, a patented upright flame that is 65% more efficient than traditional gas burner flames, and illuminated polycarbonate knobs.
A concealed Smeg CK2000ASC power pack ensures steam and odours are removed from the kitchen quickly and unobtrusively. Advanced sensor technology means the rangehood turns on automatically when it senses vapour or steam, and turns off once these have been eliminated. Natasha Klink says they had planned on using two power packs, but the hood is so powerful, one is sufficient.
Other Smeg appliances include two fully integrated dishwashers one in the main kitchen, the other in the butler's pantry. These feature the Smeg orbital wash system, which has two spray arms that operate simultaneously, in opposite directions, to ensure water is evenly distributed for a perfect wash.
The Smeg dishwashers accommodate 14 place settings and provide a choice of five wash programmes.
