Laps before breakfast

Not every property can accommodate a large, rectangular pool, but that doesn't mean you have to compromise your pool design.

For the owners of this house, who have children who are competitive swimmers, a long, narrow site was an advantage it provided room for an 18m lap pool from Mayfair Pools.

Richard Rowley of Designer Pools in Auckland says the pool was built at the sunny rear of the house, in the space left over after construction.

"In light of the sporting interests of the family, a traditional lap pool made sense," he says. "But we have also incorporated a semicircular area in the middle to add visual interest, and to provide a play space this is the deepest part of the pool."

The semicircle accommodates the pool steps and is positioned directly in front of the main outdoor living area.

"A Royal Blue pool interior was chosen as it complements the Mediterranean style architecture," says Rowley.
