The Italians have long appreciated that handcrafted furniture simply gets better with age. The polished patina of a dining table that has been handed down through the generations is proof of a lifelong appreciation of all things beautiful.

Lis Burt, director of Italian furniture specialist Mercatini, says the appeal of such pieces lies in their design, the materials used in their manufacture, and the craftsmanship that is much in evidence.

"These qualities are still in demand today," she says. "Italian furniture doesn't have a shelf life it simply improves with age and designs become classics."

The Marchetti solid walnut table featured on these pages is a good example. The table has an oak inlay, ornate iron detailing, and traditional lyre-shaped legs with a cross stretcher. Here, it is paired with Marchetti upholstered chairs, and a Marchetti walnut Vetrina glass cabinet.

Also shown is a Marchetti coffee table featuring oak and walnut parquetry with a maple inlay. The table is paired with stools finished in Nero Antico and upholstered in hide. All the Marchetti furniture was handmade in Verona, Italy.

A Parlani bed and headboard are complemented by a Louis XVI seven-drawer dresser and bedside tables. These have a black and wheat-coloured patina, and were handmade in Umbria, Italy.
