New Zealand may be one of the youngest countries on the planet in terms of settlement, but it had 85 million years to develop the unique flora and fauna that we Kiwis identify with.

Similarly, over the past few hundred years, we have developed a lifestyle and architectural vernacular that reflects our surroundings.

Designer Jenny Harris of Yellowfox teamed up with design and build company Location Homes on the featured project.

Location Homes prides itself on building singular houses in tune with the environment and suited to New Zealanders, says Harris.

"This distinctive home is set in a beautiful landscape just north of Auckland, and was created not only to maximise the glorious bay views, but to provide a sense of seclusion from the hustle and bustle of the city."

The owners also had a vision of their house that drew from the landscape using natural raw materials and a colour palette expressly found on their doorstep.

"The clients were very conscious of their surroundings when deciding on the cladding materials and especially the colours, referencing the red clay of the landscape," says the designer.

Resene Japanese Maple was chosen as an accent colour with Resene Woody Bay stain used on the weatherboards.

Inside, the vibrancy of Resene Pohutukawa provides the accent on a base palette of Resene Half Parchment. A DecoGlaze glass splashback continues the accent and provides a high-gloss counterpoint to the Meranti plywood ceilings and kitchen, which was manufactured by Mastercraft by Johns Kitchenmakers.

Augmenting the visual texture of the ply are the polished concrete floor and island benchtop, which contain stones and shells another reminder of the natural setting the house is in.

For the scullery, the designer chose a neutral palette to match the walls, using Bestwood Arctic White for the cabinetry in this space. A stainless steel bench and sleek stainless steel hardware by Hettich lend a slightly industrial air to the otherwise naturally inspired scheme.

"The mix of the owners' artistic flair and vision, and the responsive architecture, give this home a real presence," says the designer.
