When it comes to building materials, peace of mind is critical you need to know that the products you choose will go the distance.

Both the Ferndale and David Reid show homes feature products that have been appraised by BRANZ. These include Pink Batts insulation and Gib plasterboard wall linings.

BRANZ is an independent organisation that evaluates products and systems in line with the specific requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. Russell Clarke, BRANZ Appraisal project manager, says most of the products appraised fall into areas where there may have been performance concerns in the past. These can include external cladding materials, waterproofing membranes and roofing.

"Products and systems are put through a very rigorous technical assessment, and existing appraisals are monitored annually," he says.
