The original kitchen and dining room in this house were dark, cramped, closed off from the living areas and ill-suited to the social needs of the homeowner.

They wanted to create a large open-plan room, which integrated the kitchen, dining room, a living area and desk space.

Enter certified kitchen designer Julie Williams whose challenge was to realize this vision.

"To add to the sense of space, structural changes were made, which included removing walls and adding a vaulted ceiling. These changes, coupled with increased lighting, put the kitchen on center stage. Careful space planning was critical to ensure furniture placement and traffic patterns were maintained," says Williams.

The family wanted a modern space that would be warm and inviting. Williams selected Medallions Designer Gold cabinetry in Sonoma maple door style to achieve this transitional look. She matched the shade of the wooden flooring to the cabinetry for a seamlessly integrated look.

To bring in texture and color, and to add a sense of play, Williams selected Zodiac's Caroli red island countertop and splashes of red on the window coverings and backsplash.

For the desk and clean-up areas, Williams picked countertops in different colors and materials to zone the space.

The glass mosaic backsplash from Bisazza in Madagascar red is grouted with Laticrete Copper Dazzle, adding a sparkle which brings the glass to life without being over the top.
