What goes on behind the scenes is always just as vital as the more obvious features of a major construction project and that includes weather protection. Nuralite Waterproofing Limited supplied waterproofing membranes to both the Old High Court building and the new Supreme Court building.

Managing director John Simmons says two layers of Nuraply 3P waterproofing membrane a bitumen-based product were applied to roof areas on both buildings. The first membrane was bonded to the roof with an adhesive and the membrane panels welded together with a gas torch. A second membrane was then laid on top, and fully torch-welded to lock the two layers together.

For the exposed gutters on both buildings, a Nuraply 3PM cap sheet was used for the top layer. This waterproofing membrane has a slate-coloured, mineral chip finish that protects the membrane from UV rays.

Simmons says system applicator Builders Plastics Limited was contracted to provide the waterproofing for the Old High Court building right at the start of the project, ensuring the interior would be protected as restoration started. "The job was essentially two projects," he says. "Once that initial work on the heritage building was completed, work was required on the rest of the project at varying intervals throughout the construction."

Simmons says the shaped dome of the new courtroom provided a particular challenge due to its detailing and the slope of the roof. The Nuralite applicators moulded the Nuraply onto the dome-shaped substrate, and installed battens to hold the copper roof off the membrane.
