In keeping with the desire for a sustainable material palette, the designers specified Australian grey ironbark for both interior flooring and decking at Bendigo Bank's new headquarters.

The ironbark, which is a local species, was supplied and installed by Kemellies, a company that specialises in the supply and installation of solid timber floors.

Director David Booth says the unusual floor construction and massive scale of the job, which involved approximately 1200m² of internal timber flooring and 500m² of decking, provided a challenge.

"Normally, we would be installing the boards over a concrete or timber substrate," says Booth. "But for this project, we needed to devise a special system so we could install the timber on top of the steel cages that surround the in-floor services. Two layers of plywood sheets were laid on top of the cages, and the ironbark installed on top."

Booth says the logistics of the project, and the need to time the work in conjunction with other trades were further challenges for the team.

The flooring features a Bona Mega water-based polyurethane finish, which was chosen due to its non-toxic formula and natural appearance.
