Safety was naturally at the forefront of all design considerations for the stadium and fire prevention was central to this. To enable the quick and efficient suppression of potential fires, a total of 14,350 concealed sprinklers and 8387 exposed sprinklers were installed, covering an area of 24,300m². Fire protection specialist Wormald was asked to provide the fire protection and suppression systems throughout the South and East Stands, in line with the Beca engineer design brief. As it was a fast-track project, early completion of the fire system blueprints meant Wormald was able to pre-order long-lead items to ensure all products were on site when needed. The diverse project specification required several evacuation zones, each one requiring a separate monitored valve and flow switch. In addition, a complex cause-and-effect matrix called for an intricate system design and program. All testing and commissioning procedures had to be carried out in an extremely methodical and accurate manner due to the complex nature of the interfacing. Gradual handovers and client occupation of partly finished areas made this project particularly challenging for Wormald at a practical level.
