Innovative ironwork inspired by the landscape
A dramatic entrance will always set the scene for what lies beyond. For Seven Tree Lodge, a 15ft-high iron gate establishes that this is no ordinary country house. The gate, designed and handcrafted by Iron Design Center, features seven gnarled fir trees, with intertwining roots that form a rigid structural base for the two panels.
Tim Sharp of Iron Design Center, who has been in the metal trade for 40 years, says the gate incorporates 1½in-thick solid iron bars. In addition to the interwoven roots, the linked branches help maintain rigidity. A stylized raven atop one of the trees is in keeping with the mystery of the setting.
Iron Design Center also designed and built the iron railings and staircases on the house exterior, which resemble twisting branches.
"The ¾in-thick iron branches have a heavy appearance, as they needed to complement the thick wood posts," says iron artist Tim Sharp.
Other ironwork by the company includes a hammered iron bar in the media room, and three fireplace surrounds, one of which has a distinct nautical influence.
