One central feature can provide the master design stroke in a home remodeling project. The installation of a skylight into a kitchen renovation, for example, can set a contemporary tone for the interior, and at the same time introduce natural daylight to the work surfaces.

Velux America offers a range of skylights, roof windows and sun tunnels designed to allow warm, welcoming light to flood your interior, says product manager Joe Patrick.

"Skylights can transform conventional rooms into splendid spaces," says Patrick. "They introduce abundant natural light and fresh air to a room both important to an uplifting, healthy environment."

Skylights admit 30% more light than vertical windows in dormers and provide a dramatic view of the sky that is not available with standard windows. Skylights also offer more privacy, without taking up valuable wall space that can be used for decorating or storage.

"Skylight design and manufacture has come a long way in recent years and are no longer faded plastic bubbles that leak," says Patrick. "Matching flashing systems and other improvements have eliminated the fear of cutting a leaky hole in a perfectly good roof."

Skylights are suitable for overhead applications, either as sealed units or opened by hand or by remote control. Roof windows are opened and closed by hand, and are suitable for spaces such as finished attics. A third option is sun tunnels that admit light into spaces where a view is not required.

"With the introduction of natural light, a gloomy, under-utilized space can easily become a playroom for children, or an inviting, productive work area," says Patrick.

Of particular interest to remodelers is the Velux Room in the Roof program. This program offers innovative floor plans that maximize usable square footage in attics.
