Transporting large numbers of people around a high-rise office building needs an intelligent elevator system. Avoiding rush hour crushes is important, as is a security system that can manage both staff and visitors.

The Miconic 10 system developed by Schindler was chosen for Lumley Centre because its advanced technology allows people to move easily and efficiently around the building.

In essence, the Miconic 10 system sorts people according to their destination floor, then sends all the people wanting the same floor to the same elevator. This system avoids the random allocation of lifts so common in office buildings, which sees one lift crammed to capacity with people fighting over elevator buttons, while other lifts are empty.

The way the system works is that each person wanting an elevator inputs the number of the destination floor on a keypad at the landing. A screen above the keypad then immediately tells each person which elevator to go to. This speeds up the system considerably, and means each lift has few, if any, intermediate stops on the way to its destination floor.

The keypad can be placed anywhere in the building the further away from the lift doors the better, as this gives advance notice to the lift system, meaning passengers can arrive at the same time as the designated lift.

Schindler ID is the security access management system, which is fully integrated with the Miconic 10 lift system. Every user in the building has a card and user profile, detailing which floors they have access to. The cards allows the lift to guess which floor you are likely to go to. Additionally, how fast you walk is also programmed into your profile, so it can time the lift to arrive at the same time you do.
