Natural light is only one way to bring a bathroom to life. The right fittings and fixtures can bring a spacious and welcoming air to a windowless room.

In this contemporary bathroom natural light wasn't an option, says Wellington-based designer Hayley Brown.

"The space had to blend with the rest of the light-filled apartment," she says. "A number of simple but effective design solutions were put in place to create the effect of light and space."

The homeowners purchased a feature mirror to provide a focal point for the bathroom and to create the illusion of space. Inset light fixtures were selected to create a golden glow and accentuate the feeling of space.

To emphasise the bathroom's clean lines, the cabinetry was kept simple. The blond tones of white ash timber complement the extensive use of white tiles.

"To create harmony and bring a sense of cohesion to the space, I introduced Kohler bathroomware fixtures and fittings," says Brown. "Clean lines were preserved in the vanity area with symmetrically placed Conical Bell Vessels."
