Recognised as a challenge to conventional domestic architecture' by the New Zealand Institute of Architects, this contemporary Canterbury home, designed by Richard Dalman, stands as an architectural statement.

To actualise Dalman's bold vision, the Architectural Series of high performance windows and doors was selected for the exterior joinery.

Tony Brunt, of Architectural Profiles Ltd (APL), the developers of the Architectural Series, says this innovative, contemporary range is ideal for architecturally designed homes.

"The Dalman family had previously lived in a traditional 1920s Californian bungalow and were ready for something open, light-filled and contemporary," he says.

To fulfil the designer's brief for a light-filled home, Brunt says bifolding doors from the Architectural Series were ideal.

"The doors were made to suit the designer's full-height glass design, standing 2.4 metres in four sets, allowing light to illuminate downstairs living areas."

The doors were silver anodised, along with the rest of the exterior joinery, to create the industrial look integral to the design. Zincalume cladding, aluminium panels, exposed steel beams and generous glazing lent simplicity and robustness to the industrial imagery.

Brunt says the dramatic centrepiece of the interior space is a four-metre high living room of spatial proportions.

"The living room gives views back through a glazed facade to a rear courtyard and ornamental pool, and on the other side through bifold doors to panoramic Canterbury sunsets."
