The trick to achieving an accomplished kitchen design is understanding the needs of the client, and the strengths of the cabinetry you are working with. An experienced designer, working with high-tech custom cabinets, can create a kitchen that both looks the part and operates with optimum efficiency.

Interior design specialist Living Spaces works with custom cabinetry maker Wood-Mode to design attractive, functional and budget-conscious solutions for any project, says designer Mark Spears.

"This minimalist renovation is a good example. The upgrade is in a traditional 1950s-style home, but the owner favored a more contemporary and international design style for the kitchen," says Spears. "He had considered a high-end imported cabinetry line, but was unsure about the outlay. Choosing the Brookhaven series from Wood-Mode allowed him to achieve the look he was after at around one third the cost of the original pricing."

To achieve the sleek look required, Spears used various approaches. One was the introduction of adjustable lift doors, filmed in glass to disguise the range hood and items stored in adjacent cabinets. All tall pantries feature pull-out storage to ensure the kitchen works efficiently and is free of clutter.

Warm maple veneers, granite countertops, wood floors, and stainless steel and glass accents all contribute to the balanced, contemporary look.

"The design was undertaken with resale in mind and had to be practical and aesthetically pleasing to a future buyer," he says. "Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances were specified, further heightening this resale value."
