Individual chic

A kitchen required to cater to large numbers of guests at a moment's notice needs to offer seamless, hassle-free operation. When a rustic, upmarket look is also required by the owners, the resulting design can have a charm all of its own.

The Kitchen Company specialises in creating individual design responses to a client's needs, and this farmhouse project is a good example of the company's approach, says director Ian Fisher.

"We were given some initial parameters by the client for this job, and then the rest was left up to us," says Fisher. "The kitchen was allocated a large 8m x 7m space and had to serve large numbers of house guests up to fifty as part of the client's family business."

After several visits to the house to ascertain the requirements for the new kitchen, Fisher designed a central island counter that would be a distinctive visual feature and provide a useful serving station. The solid island cabinetry is built in stained, reclaimed oak and topped with a durable CaesarStone work surface in a demure Mink hue.

"We designed the island with feet to give it a furniture look, partly to play down its large proportions but also to underscore the whole farmhouse feel," Fisher says. "Pewter handles give the island a refined look, and we even included a tall end piece for storing coffee-making facilities."

Every item, from the limestone floors to the heavy-duty appliances, was chosen and installed by The Kitchen Company. In addition, the company designed all the cabinetry in the house, including feature alcove shelving in the living room.

"This is the second upscale design we've undertaken for the same client," says Fisher. "And in our industry repeat business is always flattering."
