As kitchens increasingly form part of informal living areas, it can be easy to lose sight of their main purpose during an extensive renovation. Contemporary features such as an island are great for socialising and managing work flow, but what about other essentials such as appliances? How do they fit into a new scheme?

For the owners of this kitchen, choosing a range of functional appliances that enhanced the look of their renovated kitchen was easy.

"We particularly wanted a double oven and when we saw the shiny, innovative pieces from Smeg's Piano Series we were sold. We wouldn't go back on our decision," say the owners.

The kitchen hadn't been altered since the house was built 23 years ago. As part of the renovation they decided the new open plan look required sleek, quality appliances such as the Smeg Piano Series 60cm double oven. It has fan and conventional settings, a defrosting function, a wide grill element and a distinctive stainless steel exterior.

A striking feature of this kitchen is the vibrant red splashback behind the hob. So it was important to choose a compatible rangehood with a sculptural appearance. However, the clean lines of the Smeg Piano Series 90cm rangehood are just part of its appeal. The four-speed fan, high extraction capacity, timer and easy-clean filters ensure cooking odours are cleared quickly and efficiently.

Beneath the rangehood, the Smeg Piano Series 60cm ceramic hob has stainless steel pivoted control knobs to match the benchtops and appliances. With an automatic lighted display for plate power and programmable cooking for each zone, the ceramic hob is safe and simple to use.

The kitchen is divided into zones, with the hob and double oven installed close to the bench, for easy food preparation. Opposite, the island benchtopis used for entertaining and for washing the dishes.

Also included in the Smeg Piano Series is a 60cm dishwasher. It features a full or half-load system, with multiple washing programmes and washing temperatures.
