Building an aesthetically pleasing addition to a single level house can pose difficulties. Namely, how to retain original character and proportions, yet provide a comfortable but practical living environment.

When Cape Cod Australia was asked to build an extra storey on this 1960s fibro cottage, the owners' requirements were that the addition be well integrated and in harmony with the home's existing architecture, says managing director, Alec Trostiansky.

"Our ground floor alterations provided an impressive entry foyer and more usable living areas, suitable for entertaining. The first floor addition comprises recreation area, study, two large bedrooms and a separate shower room," says Trostiansky.

The owners originally reclad the existing house with woodgrain Hardiplank, and put on a new corrugated Zincalume roof, before they decided to add a second storey.

"Cape Cod Australia then used two important skills experience and excellent design techniques to perfectly match the new addition with the existing house."

Once materials were sourced, a new front door unit was installed. Ground floor windows were changed at the owners' request to add more light. As a finishing touch, the ground floor finials were perfectly matched.

Inside, the new stairwell is in the large, open foyer, directly opposite the front door. Raked ceilings over the stairs create a vertical link to the two large upstairs bedrooms.

Cape Cod Australia has been designingand building second-storey additions for more than 40 years, renovating houses in a variety of styles and working with a broad range of materials. Cape Cod has its own team of designers, architects and sub-contractors, and prides itself on a commitment to quality design, service and workmanship.
