Important connections
Contrasting the old with the new brings disparate sections of a technology faculty together the work was completed by Amstar Construction
When different architectural styles or materials come together it can be more effective to celebrate the contrast rather than disguise the differences. However, it takes an expert practical eye to find a comfortable balance between unrelated materials and finishes.
The brief to Adams De La Mare architects for the Pakuranga College Technology Block was to unify the faculty and introduce new teaching spaces, says architect Dave De La Mare.
"As the original timber-clad building was 40 years old it was decided to highlight the newly constructed classrooms on the exterior," says De La Mare. "New additions are finished in grey metal cladding to play up the contrast with the existing white timber weatherboards."

A corridor was introduced to run the length of the block's interior, linking previously unrelated classrooms. Finishes and detailing along the corridor draw the old and new interiors together.
This job called for a wide skill resource from Amstar, says Chris Davenport, spokesperson for Amstar Construction.
"We even introduced double glazing on a classroom sited near the street, greatly improving the room's effectiveness."
