Visiting an up-to-the-minute show home by a respected design-and-build company is an easy way to see what to expect from contemporary family house design.

Set on the urban fringe in Nelson, the latest show home from Platinum Homes is a case in point. The Tasman, with its covered gable entry, timber fascias and attractive 45º wing layout is a great example of intelligent house design translating into a relaxed family lifestyle, says director Pauline Thorburn.

"As they walk through the property, many visitors comment on how spacious The Tasman feels," says Thorburn. "Although the home is configured as three bedrooms, it gives the illusion of being much larger. This is achieved through the generous use of open-plan areas and sightlines that run the length of the house.

"In addition, the 45º wing layout creates a pleasing street profile and provides shelter and privacy for the outdoor living area. Access via smooth-sliding stacker doors from the family and dining spaces makes for an easy flow and a pleasant indoor-outdoor lifestyle."

The high level of design on show in the public areas is continued in the private spaces. The spacious master bedroom benefits from a walk-in wardrobe while the ensuite has an open shower, high-end shower system, smart-flush toilet and heated towel rails.

Equally well appointed, the three-way main bathroom blends good looks and practicality.

"The 217m² house is ruggedly built, with kiln-dried, 4x2 timber framing that includes two rows of nogs plus a top plate for added strength and rain resistance. The Firth RibRaft floor offers superior insulation, strength and resistance to structural cracking compared with conventional floors.

"A cavity between the exterior cladding and framework in all our homes ensures moisture drains away and walls can breathe, creating a drier, healthier home. Roofing is concrete tile and cladding is a dense, baked-clay brick."
