SAFETY AND security are paramount concerns for any public building. Ensuring a high standard of both while maintaining style and practicality can be a daunting task.

Advances in technology have led to the increased applications of a number of traditional materials. Glass balustrading for example, would not be a reality without the advent of toughened safety glass.

As well as providing the safety levels required, these materials also lend an aesthetic quality to the building that would otherwise have not been possible, says Hudson Wilton, managing director of FGS Metalwork.

"Contemporary architecture tends to incorporate a lot of clean lines and sleek materials, making products like glass balustrades and stainless steel handrails popular choices."

Working to the architect's designs, FGS Metalwork custom manufactured all metalworks associated with Parnell College's Awhina House campus. These included the internal and external handrails, security fencing and automatic gates, balustrades, and the fabrication of the structural steel platform for the air conditioning plant located on the roof.

"It was a challenging project to work on, but with our extensive experience in the commercial construction industry we were able to meet the schedule deadlines while maintaining the level of workmanship we pride ourselves on," says Wilton.

The team also utilised its industry experience to modify the original external handrail specifications, switching from brushed stainless steel to a mirror finish as it requires less long-term maintenance.
