When a retired Waikato farming couple looked to create a new lifestyle, they headed for the beach or more precisely, the sunny Mount Maunganui coastline.

Tim and Gaye Buxton chose to build their new much-talked-about home at Coast Papamoa Beach. The couple had lived on a 121ha farm for most of their lives, before downsizing on retirement first to a 0.5ha property.

Their new home at Coast Papamoa Beach is on a 750m² site, yet the sense of space, warmth and light captured by the design and architecture is so compelling, they say they have been able to adjust to the change with ease.

The Buxtons' home was designed and built by Coast Homes, with the owners themselves providing valuable input on the design and practical aspects. As an artist, Gaye Buxton had a vision for the space and ambience she desired.

One particular concern was to ensure the home would be warm a response to years of living in a colder environment in the Waikato. Consequently, Coast Homes strategically sited the house to capture the sun all day long. In addition, extra height was added to all the windows a feature of all homes designed and built by Coast Homes to maximise both the sun and the picturesque natural surroundings at the subdivision.

All the formal and informal dining and living areas are generous, with lofty ceilings. They also offer versatility for the couple, capturing their way of life. An innovative use of partitions allows privacy or openness as required.

Doors to the outside can be thrown open to unify indoor and outdoor living areas, creating an ideal entertaining environment and providing an easy flow between inside and out.

Guests are also catered for there are inviting guest living quarters situated on the lower level.

As with all Coast Homes, attention to detail and a sense of refinement is central to the design. And because the company recognises the importance of a home as an ongoing investment, it is designed so it won't date in the short or long term.

The Buxtons say that although they are only metres from the long, white, sandy beaches of the Mount Maunganui coastline, they feel they are enjoying the best of city living.
