Heart of the Precinct
JFC undertook infrastructure works for the revitalised Takutai Square
One of the most significant features of the Britomart precinct is the public square, described by the architects as an almost perfect example of a civic space. To maximise Takutai Square's potential, JFC (John Fillmore Contracting) was commissioned to remove the original hard landscaping and undertake the new infrastructure works.
Commercial manager Troy Holland says JFC worked closely with Cooper & Co and the team to deliver a vibrant, interactive space that would be a drawcard for the public, and a venue for outdoor events. "We were pleased to be able to contribute to such a significant development, and despite tight deadlines, were able to revitalise the space with an interim scheme while the overall design is being formulated and finalised."
JFC's scope of works included bulk earthmoving, underground structures, paving, lighting, irrigation, turf construction and waterproofing. "This is a multi-level project," says Holland. "The square currently comprises a 22m x 22m square of grass, known informally as Takutai Lawn. We have added new paving, reinstated the pop-jet fountains and a sculpture titled Pipi Beds in the southeast corner, and installed park benches and mature trees."
JFC is a privately owned infrastructure company involved in all aspects of civil construction. The firm has worked on many projects within the Auckland CBD and is currently working on upgrades for Fort St, Jean Batten Pl, Fort Lane, Elliot St, Darby St and Lorne St.
