In a fast-changing retail world, the finishing touches on a project often provide an indication of underlying care and thought, contributing to the sense of permanence of the whole development.

Fit-out carpentry firm Calty Constructions was responsible for the creation of a multitude of timber features on Robina Town Centre elements which, when combined with contemporary lighting and murals, have given the complex a high-end, pampering feel. The work included timber ceiling panels, ornate timber columns, and decking inside and out, says managing director Gordon Clements.

"Calty works with Bovis Lend Lease on many substantial projects there are three things that recommend us to large-scale developers," says Clements. "Firstly, the ability to liaise closely with architects and structural engineers, tweaking elements as required to turn architectural concepts into load-bearing, practical realities.

"Secondly, we have the skill set to create the precision work required. For instance, the columns at Robina Town Centre have inlaid stainless steel elements and other complex material detailing.

"Thirdly, we can do all this rapidly and on a large scale there are thousands of square metres of ceiling panels here at Robina, for example some measuring 40m x 20m, all in a row."

To achieve the level of detailing required and to create so many elements to tight time frames, the company creates the intricate pieces on site.
