Growing global
Science meets commerce Waikato Innovation Park is designed to encourage agricultural biotechnology commercialisation
Grouping up to 1000 like businesses together over a 17ha site can provide a forum for information sharing, which in turn can lead to business development and growth of global significance.
It's a philosophy that is being put into practice at Waikato Innovation Park. Set in attractive, park-like surroundings, Innovation Park was designed to encourage the co-location of organisations engaged in advanced agricultural biotechnology enterprises. Chief executive officer Derek Fairweather says these organisations include companies and individuals undertaking research and development, as well as the commercial application and manufacture of advanced technology.
"Right from the start, we established that a major point of difference would be the creation of social spaces, where people could interact and share information," Fairweather says.
Architect Gavin Robins of Stiles and Hooker designed the building along the lines of a retail mall, with tenancies opening to an internal street that forms the spine of the building and becomes a place for social interaction. The use of corrugated iron cladding reflects the agricultural focus it was also a cost-effective building material.
"Exposing the building's working organs its skeletal structure and services further reinforces the industrial, agricultural link," says Robins.
Fairweather says Innovation Park is now beginning its third expansion project. A further 19 building sites within the 17ha zone are available, with options ranging from a ground lease, building ownership to straight tenancy leases. Master planning guidelines are available on request.
