All materials in the Ironbank building were specifically chosen to meet the strict criteria for a 5-Star Green Star Office As Built rating. The architects specified environmentally friendly insulation products from Autex Industries Ltd, including GreenStuf thermal insulation for installation in the exterior walls and the roof.

Logan Andrews, Autex key account manager of the insulation division, says GreenStuf is manufactured from 100% polyester, which is thermally bonded and produced in a roll form or pads. "The insulation is made from a minimum of 45% recycled polyester fibre," he says. "This can include polyester fibre from recycled PET plastic, such as plastic bottles. In addition, all manufacturing offcuts are reused, and at the end of its life, the insulation itself can be recycled."

Logan Andrews says GreenStuf polyester insulation has the added advantage of being easy to handle, without the nasty itching and scratching associated with some other insulation materials.

Internal walls in the Ironbank building feature Autex Industries' QuietStuf ASB (Autex Sound Blanket) acoustic insulation. This 100% polyester product is also thermally bonded and made from similar recycled product.

"Both GreenStuf and QuietStuf insulation products are non-toxic, non-irritating and non-allergenic," says Logan Andrews. "They are also highly durable they won't slump, settle or disintegrate over time, and are backed by a 50-year durability warranty."

Autex offers a thermal calculation service for architects needing such information for a code of compliance.
