green showcase
Constructing its own sustainable head office in Auckland provided an opportunity for Canam Construction to demonstrate its expertise across a range of disciplines
A modern, clean design, based on sustainable principles these are important goals for any new commercial building. What sets this project apart is the fact that the construction was carried out by Canam Construction for its own head office. Naturally, the company was keen to showcase the work of its construction, interior and joinery divisions, says managing director Loukas Petrou.
"We had three main aims: to construct a modern building that reflected the quality of our workmanship; to have a healthy, sustainable building; and to create flexible, generous and comfortable spaces," he says.
Design features include tall vertical louvres, which provide both a dramatic entrance and shading for the building. A cantilevered vertical blade of composite aluminium at the rear of the building appears to be suspended in space, and provides additional visual interest. Internally, wide spans of up to 18.5 metres and extensive glazing provide large, flexible and light-filled spaces.
"Like much of the building, the design is simple, but the construction was technically complex," he says.
The building includes an array of sustainable initiatives, including energy-efficient T5 lighting that automatically adjusts to natural light levels, a mechanical air conditioning system that recycles heat, and solar panels for the building's water. Materials such as concrete, glass and aluminium are left, as far as possible, in their natural state. Carpet tiles are carbon neutral and many other materials are recycled.
