With its lacquered elm burr cabinetry and black woodwork, this kitchen by Klassic Kitchens is as sumptuous as it is functional
Even when you have the space for a large kitchen, there's a need to introduce a sense of scale to the design. Cabinets that are in proportion to a room's dimensions are essential.
For this project a new kitchen in a large house with soaring ceilings the design needed to acknowledge the grand proportions of the home. Showroom manager Cherie Stevenson of Klassic Kitchens says the kitchen also needed to reflect the luxurious nature of the rest of the interior.
Blue Pearl granite surfaces and lacquered elm burr cabinetry, framed with high-gloss black woodwork, were specified to achieve such a look. In keeping with the highly detailed nature of the design, the drawers and doors incorporate inlaid horizontal borders. These feature a black-and-white wood trim, specially imported from Australia.
"All the cabinetry was handcrafted by Prime Veneer to achieve a professional finish," says Stevenson. "Every leaf of the elm burr veneer was bookmatched, with the veneer also used on shelving in the display cabinets. The doors have a high-gloss black edging."
To avoid a cumbersome, bulky look, the large island features a stepped countertop. Its mass is also broken up by a central wine storage cabinet, which is directly in line with the cooking centre on the rear wall. Both cabinets feature arched mantels with a high-gloss black finish.
The main sink is positioned so the owners can enjoy the views and socialise with guests while preparing meals. Large appliances were also chosen with entertaining in mind.
