Good standing

Outdoor living is part and parcel of the New Zealand way of life, which is why NZ Trade & Enterprise welcomed the chance to develop a roof terrace at its new Shanghai centre.

As with the interior, the outdoor living area provided an opportunity to showcase New Zealand design and products, and a clean, green image. Timber decking specialist Verda New Zealand worked with renowned landscape designer Xanthe White to provide a high-quality wood decking that would provide something out of the ordinary on both a visual and practical level.

White created a woven decking design reminiscent of traditional Maori tukutuku patterns. The pre-finished decking, which was manufactured to precise technical specifications, features Verda high-grade New Zealand pine clear wood.

Verda marketing manager Tania Wilson says Verda pre-finished decking is easy to install and will retain its appearance longer than standard decking. The decking also meets the NZTE requirement for sustainability.

"Verda pre-finished decking has been dried and treated with a copper-based timber preservative solution that has done away with the need for chromium and arsenic. This new treatment is more environmentally friendly, and with pressure treatment, gives long-lasting protection."

Following treatment, the timber is re-dried to enhance the fixation of the copper and reduce the moisture content and subsequent weight of the wood.

"The decking is then infused with a special formulation from Verda that brings out the wood's natural grain, adds colour, and further improves the durability and stability of the deck," Wilson says.

Verda pre-finished decking is from a new suite of products that includes wood specifically prepared for raised kitchen and herb gardens, fence panels and balustrades.
