Going underground

The top level of this sculptural home takes in beautiful terraced landscaping. The lower level – complete with indoor pool – dives into the hillside

Designed by SIAL Architects and Engineers

From the architects

This beautiful site slopes to the southwest and is part of a slightly undulating landscape.

The plot offers amazing views of the opposite side of the valley. And due to the fact that it is located outside the built-up area, this plot offered a unique opportunity to design a solitary villa with extraordinary connections between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The owner wanted us to create simple, clean spaces with maximum use of natural materials.

The resulting villa has two floors.

On the upper floor there are designed guest rooms with separate entrance and study room.

The lower floor is partially recessed into the terrain and contains the main living space with adjacent garage and indoor pool.

The home’s predominant material is the stone. On the exterior, this dominates in rough form on fair-faced concrete enclosure and sustained walls.

On the interior and adjacent exterior parts of the villa, large stone faced tiles are used.

An important part of the villa is the garden, which is designed as a landscape park and consists of several distinct areas.

The entrance parterre of the upper floor, including the green roof, has a more formal character.

From the south, the house is aligned to an orchard with a meadow.

The most sloping part of the garden is settled by the system of irregular sustained walls and terraces, which flow freely into the landscape.

The newly planted greenery fully respects the original local surrounding species.
