An ozone-friendly air conditioning system was a must for the new development at Carlaw Park. When it came time to consider indoor comfort, Chillex Group was contracted to supply and install the air conditioning and ventilation systems, which were designed by mechanical consultant Thurston Consulting.

The low-profile roof wasn't designed to support any additional weight, so the Mitsubishi Electric VRF condenser units were placed outside on the top deck of the Wilson carpark building, says Chillex Group managing director Cameron Crawford.

The work was done in two stages to an extremely tight programme. The carpark building opened first, followed by the Quest hotel building. Despite the unexpected delays in the delivery of the huge fans to vent exhaust fumes from the carpark, the company met all of the milestone dates set by Haydn & Rollett.

"A focused and experienced project team led by our senior contracts manager Bruce Giles was the key to our success," says Crawford.

The R410A air conditioning units in the guest suites and serviced apartments of the hotel needed to look their best. For this reason, Chillex Group went with Mitsubishi Electric VRF units incorporating hiwall type terminal units in the hotel rooms. Another benefit was the energy-efficiency rating of the R2 series City Multi heat recovery air conditioning systems, which meets Green Star standards, Crawford says.

The Mitsubishi system needed to interface with Quest's monitoring programme both on site and at its central headquarters. Any worries the two systems wouldn't work together were groundless, Crawford says. The technical solution to making the link involved connecting both systems with a LAN cable and using a web browser to control and monitor the air conditioning from a user-friendly graphical interface.
