Selecting a home designed for a long future goes beyond ensuring it has sound building principals and a durable construction. Homes of tomorrow will need to consider factors such as energy efficiency and an eco-friendly make-up.The six Clarendon homes on display in the new Nelsons Ridge Development demonstrate a shift in Sydney housing to-wards these concerns, says Clarendon Homes state manager Peter Flynn."Several features, including being eco-friendly and affordable, earned these homes a Greensmart HIA accreditation," he says. "All six also attracted a five-star Nathers rating for energy efficiency one of the highest ratings in the industry."The designs address energy conservation in several ways representing a considerable cost-saving to owners in terms of both water and energy bills.Firstly, a generous use of glazing ensures maximum solar exposure for living areas. High ceilings and strategic window placements provide excellent cross ventilation, while eaves to the first floors allow for greater protection from the elements."Increased insulation and sarking levels provide additional protection from temperature extremes," says Flynn. "Glass louvred windows to control light and ceiling fans in the living areas and bedrooms help regulate comfort levels." A view of a Clarendon Home. Weather strips feature on all external doors, helping to keep rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter.Other eco-friendly elements include the use of gas cooktops and gas solar water."Every aspect of the homes' energy efficiency is considered right down to economical water usage with knock on benefits to the environment," says Flynn.AAA-rated tapware and a 5000L water tank feature in each home, with water from the tanks reticulated to the laundry, toilets and garden. All showerheads and basins have water reduction devices."The home's multi-faceted facades have a striking, contemporary street appeal, moving away from simpler two-dimensional frontages. Single slope roofs have become a feature as well capitalising on sunlight penetration into living areas and offering fresh aesthetic appeal."The homes' environmental focus also extends to the use of low-maintenance materials including natural-hued mortar, aluminium window frames and Colorbond fascias and gutters.
