Now that our kitchens have becomethe heart of our homes, we're increasingly looking for high-end cabinetry with the look and durability of fine furniture.

It's a development that's been gathering pace over the last decade or so, says Steve Pfister, director of sales and marketing for Mouser Custom Cabinetry.

The other change is toward kitchens with more work space and appliances, as home chefs encourage family and friends to join them while they prepare a meal.

"Multiple sinks, preparation areas and ovens are more common, along with commercial cooktops, undercounter microwaves and warming drawers," he says. "Homeowners are also looking for two or three places to gather and eat together, such as around the kitchen island and at a dining table nearby."

The designers also work alongside contractors to ensure the cabinetry is installed correctly in new kitchens, or in remodeling projects.
