Hanging around, anxiously watching for the next lift, then making a quick dash to catch it before the doors snap shut is a thing of the past with the new generation of elevators.

A group of six high-speed lifts featuring KONE's new destination control system has been installed at 80 Queen Street. With the KONE Polaris system to optimise passenger flow, vertical transportation in buildings is dramatically improved. The system is quite simple for passengers, who select their destination on a touch-screen operating panel in the lobby before they enter the lift. At this stage, they are assigned to the most appropriate lift to ensure they are delivered swiftly and comfortably to the chosen floor. Because passengers are grouped according to destination, there are no unnecessary stops and journey times are reduced.

KONE Polaris uses artificial intelligence to learn and forecast the traffic flows of the building. When traffic intensity alters, the control system measures the changed patterns and switches its optimisation routines accordingly. Depending on the number of cars and their load size, this system increases the handling capacity of an elevator group by between 20% and 100% during peak traffic.

The KONE Polaris system can be installed into new buildings or used to upgrade existing elevator systems. A variation, the Enhanced Destination Control configuration, is installed at 80 Queen Street. With this, destination operation panels are located only on main entrance floors, and other floors feature conventional operating panels. This system is useful for modernising buildings and for buildings with heavy peak traffic.
