From sunrise to sunset
With a floating roof design and transparent double-glazed walls, this Central Otago house by ADNZ designer Gary Todd is at one with the natural environment
At first glance, this Central Otago site has it all 360° views over a vineyard to the picturesque snow-capped peaks of the mountain ranges. But such environments are also noted for their wind and climate extremes, and this one was no exception, says designer Gary Todd, a member of Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ).
"The house needed to provide shelter from the wind, and it also needed to be energy efficient but we didn't want to compromise the view or the owners' desire for a large house with a very clean-lined, modern aesthetic."
Todd came up with an innovative design response to the environment. He says a series of thin roofs hovering above the landscape, and positioned around a sheltered, central courtyard seemed an ideal solution for the rural site.
"The long, low roofs effectively allow the house to nestle into the surrounding landscape, while the double-glazed walls provide a transparency. This means the owners can capture the views in all directions, even from the central courtyard."
