Fresh start

It is easy to understand why people turn to bright and bold colors in difficult times to bring some much-needed joy to their lives.

Which is one of the reasons why Sonu Mathew, ASID, Benjamin Moore Paints senior interior designer, is predicting that green is going to be in hot demand in 2010.

"Green has such meaning and symbolism," says Mathew. "It represents renewal, and is the color of spring and new growth. Green is also the easiest color for the eye to see, and the most restful and comforting of all.

"Benjamin Moore's Cedar Green 2034-40, in particular, is a color that, on its own, can contribute a vibrant pop to a room, or create a softer look when paired with neutrals. It is the perfect foil for bright contrasts, such as deep blues and orangey reds."

Cedar Green is a yellow-tinged green, which Mathew says is a natural continuation from the yellows that have been prevalent this year.

"Fashions are progressive they don't happen independently of each other. 2009, for example, was all about optimism, hence the yellow palette we saw a lot of. 2010 is all about new beginnings, so we've taken the optimistic tones of last year and come up with a natural progression into green hues."

Within the idea of new beginnings lies a trio of concepts alternate view, fresh perspective and simple indulgences. The secret to success is to find the color within the concept that works for you, says Mathew.

"Alternate view is about trying something completely different don't be afraid to shake up your world. Fresh perspective draws on the natural world for its inspiration, while simple indulgences is about redefining luxury in a very personal way. New beginnings allows us to treat ourselves, so find the concept that most appeals and then follow it through."
