Queensland's subtropical climate and expansive coastline have long been a drawcard for people looking for a lifestyle change, but the climate and salt-laden air can take a toll on building materials.

The solution for 64 Ferny Avenue, a nine-level office building at Surfers Paradise, was a refurbishment with a new white Alucobond entry facade. This distinctive aluminium composite material, which was installed by Composite Panels, was chosen for its aesthetics, as well as its durability and resistance to salt corrosion and Queensland's harsh UV sunlight.

Designer Jacques De Bedout of Archidiom Design Surfers Paradise specified the German-manufactured Alucobond panels to be installed in a horizontal pattern. This gives the building a contemporary look and provides a solid, monolithic entry. De Bedout says the expansive entry facade, which features more than 200m² of Alucobond, needed to balance the shape of the building and integrate with the existing colours to achieve a unified and distinctive look within the Surfers Paradise streetscape.

Composite Panels exercised its extensive Alucobond fabrication and installation experience to deliver a seamless construction. Director Adam Adams says Composite Panels had to carry out the work efficiently and quickly, while the building remained open.

"The Alucobond was fabricated to fit the building's contours," he says. "This material can be cut and shaped easily, without having to compromise the factory-applied surface finish, which will not require painting for decades. Alucobond's adaptability means it can be used to create any number of innovative design solutions for both exterior and interior applications and it is equally well suited to soft curves or straight lines."

During the past several years, Composite Panels has become firmly established on the Gold Coast and has worked on many high-end projects that have won national building and architectural awards. The company's qualified fabricators and installers have acquired a deep knowledge of Alucobond processing and provide professional service to the building industry of Queensland and northern New South Wales.
