Fresh air gourmet
The trend towards outdoor living has seen the traditional barbecue evolve into a substantial cooking option. Create an outdoor kitchen following pointers from HIA
Australia's temperate climate has always seen home design blurring the boundaries between indoors and out. The latest example of this is the growing popularity of outdoor kitchens.
These outdoor spaces can be as simple or elaborate as you want, as they create a casual, yet functional area where food can be prepared, served, and enjoyed.
Here, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) ticks off elements to consider before planning your outdoor kitchen.
The association says points to address include durable, weatherproof finishes, shelter from the elements, an external natural gas bayonet, a cupboard to store cutlery, plates and glasses, a gas heater for chilly evenings and a refrigerator. Depending on budget and space, a bench, sink, rangehood, and a dishwasher can be included. Accessibility to the main kitchen is important as well as access to plumbing and electrical services. Near a pool, you will need fencing and non-slip flooring.
Task lighting over the food preparation area and ambient lighting for the dining section are other factors to consider.
