French splendor
This grandly proportioned French Provincial home is built using as pure a form of the style as is possible with today's materials
The relationship between builder and mill worker is important in any project, especially when many custom-made windows and doors are involved.
Exclusive Windows, responsible for all the windows, doors, beams, trims and crown molds in this home, has collaborated on more than 100 projects with Northridge Builders, including a number of historic residential preservations. Their expertise made them a sensible choice for this French Provincial home.
Tom Lavins of Exclusive Windows says projects with Northridge Builders are always a creative challenge for the company.
"Everything they do is one of a kind. We would never use the same window layout in two houses. We are always working to give the client everything that they're looking for. This often means coming up with completely fresh designs every time," he says.
Every item was chosen to fit the style of the house, including the crown molds and the divisions between window panes.
Stained white oak doors were used for the two main floors of the house.
The third floor and basement doors were primarily two-panel, painted masonite.
The company also provided the ceiling beams in the living area. These are painted, poplar plywood and hollow for ease of installation. The beams were distressed on site by the painters.
"The painters beat them with a pillowcase full of nuts and bolts, and used little picks to make wormholes," Lavins says.
Exclusive Windows can also make mantels, built-in cabinets, columns, raised panels, and entertainment systems.
"Pretty much anything that's custom with wood, we can do. We can also work from client's drawings if necessary, " Lavins says.
Carpenters from Exclusive Windows can work with architects and builders, or work directly with the homeowner.
The carpenters can analyze your design for the best product match, verify building code compliance, and are able to do on-site measuring for repairs and replacements.
