Custom staircases can have a strong visual presence, as this project illustrates
First impressions matter, which is why the entrance hall sets the tone for a home's interior. Within this space, it's often the staircase that creates a sense of arrival and grandeur.
The curved staircase in this house in the 675 West Paces Ferry development is a case in point. With its red oak treads and custom metal panels, it has a dramatic sculptural presence and forms a key part of the architectural detailing.
The stairs were built by Southern Staircase, a company that specializes in pre-assembled staircase systems. Marketing director Steve Vibert says the staircase needed to complement the style of the house while providing modern design features and adhering to strict building codes.
"As each staircase is custom designed and manufactured, we can provide builders with templates of a stair to see exactly where it will sit," Vibert says. "This enables us to modify the design if necessary. We can quickly determine, through our CAD processes, if a foyer is the correct size, for example."
