Heritage buildings can provide a charming

ambience, but often require extensive upgrades to bring them into line with modern requirements.

When this 1920s library building in Onehunga was converted to a family-friendly cafe, the designer turned to Kohler to supply the bathroomware needed to create a bright, spacious, and clean environment, says cafe owner Debbie Leaver.

"Because the Library Cafe is a heritage building, we could not knock down the walls, so we were working in a constrained space," says Leaver.

The design solution for the bathrooms was to combine sleek contemporary lines with functional, easy-to-clean designs, says Kohler product manager Vivienne Wood.

"The clean simplicity of the vitreous china, textures, colours and new modern fittings with matching curved shapes were the main solutions to achieving the design objectives. The outcome is a clean and crisp facility with a bright airy atmosphere that matches the rest of the cafe decor," she says.

In the main bathrooms, shown below right, the designer specified twin Kohler Odeon semi-recessed basins with Kohler Symbol tapware, to complement the Kohler Opiaz toilet suites. The disability toilet, below left, features the Ove raised-height toilet suite from Kohler, which has a 460mm raised-height pan and complies to the NZ Building Code GI and AS1172 standards. The Ove is WELS rated as 4.5 litre flush and a 3 litre half-flush, for water efficiency, and has a quiet-close seat.
