Following the contours
The curved shape of this home reflects the lines of the local terrain
In a project like Luna Rossa, everyone involved has to be able to come up with innovative ways of dealing with unusual design elements. Madak Kadam of Madak Kadam Design, whose studio undertakes metal, glass and stone work, acted as consultant to the architect on the engineering and design of the house. His studio also fabricated the copper roof, metal gates and custom hardware.
Kadam's specialty is resolving difficult design problems with his combined training in engineering, fine art and manufacturing.
"I take a concept, see it as an artist, then design it to work. I'm my own engineer and fabricator, because I don't like to be told it can't be done. Here I custom-designed many elements, such as roofing details and pool gates, to ensure they were practical and aesthetically pleasing," says Kadam.
The curved geometry of the roof meant inventing a new way to shape and fasten the copper, and because the dry conditions meant the copper would not develop a natural patina, this was induced chemically, then artificially aged.
