All architecture is a design response to the location and this extends to the interiors. For this project, it was the spectacular waterfront position that helped determine the look of the house and subsequently the master suite.
The house, on Puget Sound, was designed by architect Sharon Everson, who says the architecture acknowledges the Pacific Northwest style.
"It is a very modern interpretation, which is in keeping with the more contemporary architecture of the neighboring properties," she says. "The house features a lot of natural wood and is visually grounded by a massive stonework base, but it has an atypical flat roof. The master suite continues this feel, mixing the rustic elements with luxurious materials."

Everson says the materials needed to work visually with the old-growth fir structural posts, which were sandblasted and oiled. To this end, mahogany was specified for the windows, doors and mouldings. It also features on the tub surround, his-and-hers vanities and soffits that are reminiscent of a luxury yacht interior.
"The mahogany soffits help to reduce the apparent height of the 15ft ceilings, bringing a more human scale to the suite and making it feel more intimate," the designer says.
The vertical tambour detail on the mouldings is replicated in sliding barn doors within the suite, and around the top of the vanity cabinets.
Although Absolute Black granite features elsewhere in the house, for the bathroom Everson specified Antique Brown granite slabs that bring a softer look to the vanity tops and tub surround. The granite also wraps the walls, beams and posts beside the tub. Absolute Black granite does make a brief appearance, however as an inlay in the travertine marble floor.
Other special features of the suite include a round porthole window that captures a view of the harbor entrance, and oil-rubbed bronze faucets, light pendants and hardware.
