Finishing touches
The dramatic presence of the Grand Atrium at Auckland Museum is enhanced by the lighting
ILLUMINATING THE Grand Atrium to highlight the bowl and curved stone wall was a challenge for the specialist lighting consultancy. Targetti NZ was contracted to assist the architect in finding products that would best light the space.
Consultant Donna Julian says the company had to provide a solution that would allow the space to be used for both public events and everyday use.
"The bowl lighting was of particular importance, with the shape, colour and texture all needing to be highlighted," she says. "Fittings had to be durable, cool to touch and performance driven. The lighting also had to minimise glare and heat the luminaires could not operate above 75°C."
Donna Julian says most fittings required special accessories to achieve the desired lighting effects. These included ellipsoidal lenses, spreader lenses, glare visors and anti-glare shields.
"Another challenge was the location of the Simes Megafocus projectors. As well as providing the best lighting, these had to be accessible for long-term maintenance. On-site testing ensured the best mounting position.
Other products specified included the Simes Reghello recessed stair light and Ring inground lighting.
