Not all the mechanical services at the museum are hidden two glass lift shafts expose hoistways and structural elements, providing a modern, industrial aesthetic in keeping with the contemporary design of the extension. For the lift supplier, Otis Elevator Company, the design added to the challenge of the installation. But construction manager Dave Debney says the three Otis Gen2 glass lifts in the Grand Atrium also provided an opportunity to highlight the company's professionalism. "Accommodating the great number of different tradespeople all needing to work in the same place at the same time required considerable team work and co-ordination. But there is no doubt the glass lifts enhance the wow factor for visitors. As you move up to the top floor, you can see the whole of the city from inside the lift car."Otis also provided a large, 4.5-tonne goods lift, which was customised and fitted out to match the other three passenger lifts. The lift is designed to accommodate the large, heavy artefacts that are frequently moved about the building. A view of an elevator supplied by Otis Elevator Company.
