Filling in the gaps
Some common problems encountered during a renovation project are addressed in Renovate Villas, a book recently published by BRANZ
Renovating an old villa may initially appear to be a slightly daunting project. However, when you understand the issues to be faced and the processes, many of these problems can be ironed out easily.
BRANZ has recently published a new technical resource book, Renovate Villas, which is aimed at helping architects, designers, builders and homeowners deal with common problems associated with renovating an old villa.
Renovate Villas is the first in the series, with upcoming titles covering similar issues in bungalows, Art Deco houses, and homes from the 1940s 1960s.
The book is well illustrated with clear drawings showing typical construction methods for framing, roofing, windows and interior building elements. For example, the workings of double-hung sash windows are explained in six drawings and two photographs.
A chapter covers compliance paths and gives examples of work where a building consent will be needed. Each example takes you step-by-step through the building code clauses to be addressed, the relevant performance criteria and the possible compliance paths.
To order a copy of Renovate Villas, call BRANZ, phone 0800 808 085 (press 2) or visit the website: www.branz.co.nz.
