Fantasy element

Great design, regardless of the subject matter, is equal parts fact and fantasy. The trick is to present the two in such a way that neither is immediately discernable.

For the kitchen featured on these pages the design fact is all about the appliances.

This presented its own set of problems, says designer Lee Hardcastle of Enigma Interiors.

"The owners entertain a lot and the kitchen needed to reflect this. The first hurdle was to find an appliance brand that could supply the full list of items needed. Not only could Smeg deliver, but the combination of stainless steel and glass in their appliances matched the kitchen's modern look."

The next issue was to find a practical home for each item. By placing them side by side, the problem of easy access was solved. However, three of the appliances are 600mm wide, while the oven is 900mm wide.

The solution was to alter the cabinet widths above and below the appliances. A backlit wall above the oven adds further visual interest.

The kitchen's most obvious, and fantasy feature, is the deep red cabinetry, says Hardcastle.

"This daring tone was either going to make or break the design, and was achieved by fixing a translucent film to the inside of the glass doors."

The galley-style appliance and storage area is complemented by the multi-level island, which provides ample preparation space.
