Exotic but eco-friendly

Choosing sustainable commercial flooring is not just about eco-friendly materials it's also about selecting products that will go the distance, while still providing the right aesthetics.

Ecodure Horizontal Coffee bamboo flooring from Bamboo Flooring Systems was specified for the cafe, meeting rooms and breakout areas on five levels of the BNZ Quay Park building in Auckland.

Bamboo Flooring Systems director Warwick Adams says that following this successful installation, Ecodure bamboo flooring has also been specified for the new BNZ Queen Street development.

"Ecodure bamboo is harvested when the bamboo reaches maturity, at 5½ to 6 years, when its fibres are at peak density. By using optimum Moso bamboo harvested in this way, we ensure our products are particularly hard and stable."

Adams says Bamboo Flooring Systems also supplies compressed bamboo, which utilises hot-pressed technology to provide greater stability and hardness, compared to the cold-pressed manufacturing method.

"This technology also ensures the bamboo flooring is harder than the majority of hardwoods, which makes it well suited to commercial projects."

Adams says Ecodure bamboo is imported with moisture levels between 10% and 12%, to best suit New Zealand conditions.

"Ecodure bamboo also has the advantage of being FSC certified to maximise Green Star New Zealand rating points. After the bamboo is cut, the same plant is able to grow again and again, unlike hardwoods."

In addition to flooring, the company supplies a new bamboo panelling product, which is available in 1220mm x 2440mm sheets of varying thickness.
